Culture & Events

Music and literature in practically every conceivable variation, major festivals, markets, theatre, cabaret and cheerful folk festivals shape the discovery region's events calendar throughout the year.
There are also unique art treasures in the cathedral and churches just waiting to be discovered, as well as proud castles and palaces, pretty townscapes with typical half-timbered buildings, resort architecture and also interesting exhibitions on industrial culture and history in the various museums too.

The Discovery Region Edersee is not just a seasonal operation, it is an experience that goes on all-year-round. Extensive cultural activities and programme also have their own part to play in this. There isn't one single day when you aren't able to visit one of the cultural activities. It doesn't matter what cultural direction you want to take, theatre, music ranging from classic to pop, exhibitions from paintings to sculptures, churches from cathedrals to small village churches, museums from the silence of the indoors to the lively open-air museum, cabarets on enthralling stages, classical concerts in palaces or grand open-air festivals - here too you can discover a land of unlimited opportunities and variety.

Waldeck castle

The castle perching high above the Edersee is the symbol of the region. Until 1655, it was the residence of the ruling Count of Waldeck. The castle museum mainly displays exhibits from the era of the women's prison and jail. Guided tours are also possible using an audio-guide system. From the castle, there are many views to be enjoyed, including across the Edersee to its dam walls as well as over the National Park Kellerwald-Edersee.

St. Peter's Cathedral Fritzlar

St. Peter's Cathedral in Fritzlar received the honorary title as a papal basilica minor in 2004, and can be considered one of the most significant buildings of romanesque and gothic architecture in the central German region. As part of their visit or guided tour, visitors have access to the crypts with the famous early-gothic Mercy Seat and cloisters as well as to the neighbouring cathedral treasury.

Synagogue in Vöhl

The former synagogue in the borough of Vöhl was consecrated in 1829. It served the Jewish community until 1938. The building in Mittelgasse 9, survived the years of National Socialism relatively unscathed, was renovated by a local support group and is used today for concerts, lectures, film screenings, memorials, etc.
