Baroque Palace of Prince Maximilian of Hesse

Maximilianschloss in Jesberg

Maximilianschloss

The palace in the Treisbachgrund was built by the Reichsfeldmarschall (Reich Field Marshal) Prince Maximilian of Hesse. He designed a garden in the Dutch style behind the palace with a zoological garden at the end. The German Red Cross (DRK) has an elderly residential and nursing home with two new buildings on the same spot today. The renovated palace is also owned by the DRK.

Four daughters resulted from the prince's marriage with the Darmstadt Princess Frederike Charlotte. Following the request of the princesses, Maximilian created a "decorative area" around an old oak tree in the wood to the south of Jesberg and designed an avenue of oaks. Parts of the "Princesses Garden" and avenue still remain today. Since the Prince did not have a male heir and was heavily in debt towards the end of his life, his Jesberg inheritance suffered a chequered fate.
The palace later passed into public ownership and has served as a POW camp, barracks, a district court, elderly care home, an apartment building and home for asylum seekers amongst other things. After it had been standing empty for a considerable length of time and was threatening to fall into disrepair, it was bought by the Red Cross. Nowadays, it belongs to the Seniorenzentrum (Centre for the Elderly) Kellerwald.

Weddings in the Maximilianschloss
In the historical ambience of the Jesberg Maximilianschloss, surrounded by portraits of the princesses and the owner of the palace, the registry office performs marriage ceremonies within these impressive rooms.

Schlossberg with Access to the Keep

Schlossberg

Schlossberg

The overall appearance of the townscape and an indication to the history of Jesberg is defined by the Schlossberg with its castle ruins. The castle was erected by the noble family of Linsingen and formed an additional stronghold along with Fritzlar and Naumburg for the bishops of Mainz in the campaign against the Hessians during the 13th century. The first recorded mention of the castle "Jagsperg" was in 1241which gave the place its name. The ruin and its keep (opened from 1.4 to 31.10) having undergone the ravages of time has been able to be restored and made safe during the past few years. The Schlossberg, with its festival ground and newly-constructed bandstand, has evolved into a charming tourist attraction.
