At the show mine (Besucherbergwerk), you can enter the heart of the miners working world "on-site" as part of an "Underground Excursion". An "Above-Ground Excursion" in the "Coal & Energy" theme park explains how brown coal is extracted from open-cast mines and the process of its conversion into electricity.

Nowadays, a popular destination for local recreation in the North Hesse region is the Borken Lakeland which evolved from a former open-cast mine.
You can discover how these "Second-Hand Landscapes" have been created from former open-cast mines in the Nature Conservation Information Centre "Borkener See".
